Free File fillable tax forms are the digital counterparts of the paper forms used for submitting income tax returns. The IRS provides these forms online for savvy taxpayers already familiar with the forms they need to use.
To modernize the filing process, the IRS introduced Free File fillable tax forms back in 2009. Their introduction has played a significant role in reducing filing errors, with over 46 million people having utilized Free File fillable forms to date.
For the tax year 2021, individuals or families with an income at or below $73,000 can benefit from free professional tax software programs, as the IRS has partnered with various providers to offer these services at no cost through the Free File program. Remember, while anyone can download these forms from the IRS website without charge, only those who meet the income criteria can access the complimentary tax preparation software.
The IRS began accepting 2021 tax year returns on January 24, 2022.
The convenience of Free File fillable tax forms lies in the ability to complete them electronically—on a computer, smartphone, or tablet—without printing. After filling out the forms, taxpayers can electronically sign and submit them directly to the IRS using secure encryption.
Unlike commercial tax software, Free File fillable forms don’t offer filing guidance or support for identifying potential deductions. They also don't include state tax forms. For added help and state tax forms, which might come with a fee, taxpayers can turn to one of the IRS's partner sites.
You must have earned $73,000 or less in 2021 to qualify for Free File. Due to Emancipation Day in Washington, D.C., on April 15, most 2021 tax returns are due on April 18, 2022. However, residents of Maine and Massachusetts have until April 19, 2022, because of the Patriots' Day holiday observed in those states.
To start your digital tax filing with free fillable forms, you must gather specific details beforehand. You, your spouse, and any dependents need your prior year's adjusted gross income (AGI) Social Security numbers to complete the forms.
Your W-2 form, Social Security benefits, and unemployment compensation documents are also needed. Gather financial and other documents for small businesses, rental property, and other interests.
For filing with free fillable forms, you should have your personal identification number with a five-digit pin or your last year's AGI, which you can find on your previous tax return. If these details elude you, the IRS provides an online tool to help retrieve your AGI.
The IRS Free File program represents a collaborative Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with the Free File Alliance, which is a group consisting of leading tax preparation software providers. These IRS Free File partners deliver the “IRS Free File” offering, enabling eligible taxpayers to prepare and file their federal taxes at no cost. In some cases, state tax filing is also included for free. Typical contractual terms do not define this PPP; instead, it embodies a shared effort and cooperation benefiting taxpayers and the federal government. As part of the Free File Alliance, these partners work with the IRS to offer free electronic federal tax preparation and filing services. The partnership, a non-profit venture, is committed to aiding millions in filing their federal taxes online without charge.
It should be noted that the IRS does not favor any one partner firm over another.
If you’re new to Free File, you can select a Free File company based on the criteria outlined on IRS.gov. If you meet the requirements of the chosen Free File offer, you will incur no fees for the preparation and electronic filing of your federal tax return.
If you have used the IRS Free File service before, the same company will send you a welcome-back email with a link to their site and filing instructions. Free federal tax return preparation and e-filing are available if you meet the offer's conditions via this site.
No Free File Program participant will charge you to file your federal tax return if you qualify. You should not face any requests to purchase products or services in exchange for the free preparation of your Federal tax return through a Free File program participant.
Within the Free File offerings, companies must not propose bank products typically associated with additional fees, such as refund transfer products (for example, refund anticipation loans).
Some partners in the IRS Free File Program also provide complimentary state tax preparation services, while others may request a fee for state filing. It is essential to read each company’s information thoroughly.
This assurance is prominently displayed on every Free File company’s website. Should any issues arise regarding accuracy, they can be addressed directly with the respective company that prepared your return.
If a Free File offer doesn't match your requirements after visiting a company’s website, you can return to the IRS.gov Free File website to find an alternative offer that may be suitable. Free File companies are tasked with informing you if you do not qualify for their service, providing a link to the IRS.gov Free File site.
Should you require assistance navigating a company’s IRS Free File website during your tax filing, you are encouraged to use the company’s accessible customer service offerings.
The IRS Free File program includes an online lookup tool, facilitating searching for an offer that fits your needs best.
